Balanced Ligamentous Tension (BLT) provides a way of working with gentle and subtle techniques to assist with the joints of the body. It is an effective way to work with the involuntary mechanism introduced to Osteopathy by William Sutherland.

This course offers an approach to osteopathic treatment that focuses on restoring optimal structural alignment through the gentle manipulation of ligaments and soft tissues. BLT emphasises gentle, precise manual interventions to address abnormal tension patterns and restrictions that contribute to musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. By learning to identify areas of dysfunction within the body’s connective tissue system, practitioners will develop skills to release restrictions, improve joint mobility, and enhance overall biomechanical function.

Through this course, you will gain:

  • A thorough understanding of the core principles behind Balanced Ligamentous Tension (BLT) and its relationship to tensegrity

  • A review of relevant research

  • Practical techniques you can use in your clinical setting.

  • Hands-on experience in applying BLT techniques to various regions of the body.

CURRICULUM

  • Explore the clinical significance of BLT in treating musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.

Research of BLT

  • Review key studies and current evidence supporting the use of BLT in clinical practice.

  • Discuss the efficacy and application of BLT in various musculoskeletal conditions.

Tensegrity Model

  • Learn the concept of tensegrity and how it applies to the body’s structural balance and functional integrity.

  • Examine the role of tension and compression in maintaining stability within the musculoskeletal system.

BLT Practical Techniques

  1. Sacroiliac Joint (SI), Circumduction, and Hip Decompression: Develop hands-on skills for performing BLT techniques targeting the SI joint, including circumduction and hip decompression to alleviate pain and dysfunction.

  2. Shoulder Complex (Clavicle, Glenohumeral, Scapulothoracic): Master the techniques for addressing dysfunction in the shoulder complex, including the clavicle, glenohumeral joint, and scapulothoracic articulation.

  3. Sitting and Sidelying Hip Techniques: Learn and practice BLT methods for treating hip restrictions and enhancing mobility in both sitting and sidelying positions.

  4. Knee, Patella, Tibia/Fibula: Acquire the practical skills to apply BLT to the knee joint, addressing patellar tracking issues and tibiofibular dysfunction.

  5. Elbow and Interosseous Membrane: Understand how to apply BLT techniques to the elbow joint and interosseous membrane to reduce pain and improve function.

Such a great course, content was easy to follow, and demonstrations were shown and explained well. I am really looking forward to implementing all that I have learnt in my practice and after this weekend I feel I have the skill and confidence to do so. Thank you so much.

Great course. Jamie was extremely helpful with guiding through the techniques and cranial concepts. I feel I have a better understanding of BLT as a concept and know what I am feeling for. The course gives me confidence to use these techniques in practice.

Fantastic course, I would highly recommend. Jamie’s wealth of knowledge and ability to present in a supportive and logical way allowed all of us to draw on our own osteopathic abilities and really grow.
