Introduction to Cranial Osteopathy

A practical, clinically focused introduction to osteopathy in the cranial field

online course • 10 CPD points • available on-demand

Introduction to Cranial Osteopathy is a comprehensive course designed to introduce osteopathic practitioners to the principles and techniques of osteopathy in the cranial field. Focused on the subtle manipulation of the cranial bones and their impact on the central nervous system, this course provides in-depth training on assessing and treating dysfunctions related to cranial motion. Ideal for osteopaths looking to expand their therapeutic toolkit, this course emphasises hands-on practice, clinical application, and the holistic benefits of cranial osteopathy in treating a wide range of conditions.

Through this course, you will:

  • Gain a solid understanding of cranial anatomy, palpation techniques, and treatment approaches

  • Be enabled to effectively assess and treat cranial dysfunctions in clinical practice

CURRICULUM

What we’ll cover

  • Frontal Anatomy and Motion Palpation

    • Identify key anatomical landmarks of the frontal bone and understand involuntary axis motion.

    • Learn techniques for diagnosing external and internal rotation and managing metopic compression.

    • Practice techniques for releasing frontal eminence moulding and suture moulding.

  • Parietal Anatomy and Motion Palpation

    • Study the parietal bone's anatomy and its involuntary motion patterns.

    • Learn to diagnose external and internal rotation, perform suture palpation, and apply decompression techniques.

    • Practice palpation of the falx membrane and superior sagittal venous sinus, including drainage.

    • Release moulding in the parietal eminence.

  • Sphenobasilar Symphysis (SBS) Palpation

    • Diagnose physiological strains (flexion, extension, SB/Rot, torsion) and unphysiological strains (compression, lateral, vertical).

    • Understand the influence of birth processes and interventions on SBS dysfunction.

    • Learn palpation techniques for diagnosing and treating SBS dysfunctions.

  • Sacral Palpation

    • Master palpation techniques for flexion and extension, and identify common strain patterns in the sacrum.

    • Explore treatment approaches for sacral strains, including synchronising pelvic and thoracic diaphragms.

  • Overview of Sutherland’s 5 Phenomena

Gain an understanding of Sutherland’s five key phenomena in cranial osteopathy and their clinical application.

  • Physiology of Involuntary Motion (IVM) and THM Wave

Review current research on the physiology of the Involuntary Motion (IVM) and the THM (Tidal Health Movement) wave.

  • Brief Palpation of Listening

Introduce the concept of "listening" during cranial palpation to detect subtle changes in tissue tension and cranial rhythms.

  • Cranial Base Palpation

    • Study the anatomy and physiology of the cranial base, including occiput and sphenoid bones.

    • Learn to differentiate between physiological and unphysiological strains at the cranial base.

  • SBS Diagnosis and Treatment

Develop diagnostic skills and treatment techniques for addressing SBS dysfunctions.

In 1997, Jamie began assisting on the undergraduate Osteopathic technique classes at the ESO and clinical supervision in the undergraduate Children's Clinic where he stayed until he moved back to NZ in 2005 after completing his MSc in Osteopathy.

Jamie's practice is focused primarily on babies and pre/post pregnancy, however he treats all age and a wide variety of complaints. Jamie is highly skilled in assisting and teaching students the techniques of cranial osteopathy.

Regulation: Jamie Taylor is a member of the register of Osteopaths in New Zealand and the society of Osteopaths New Zealand.

Thank you for your guidance over the last 2 days. I feel more confident in using my hands to help tell the story of the tissues as a conduit to their body. Cranial osteopathy has always been “mysterious” but this course has helped solidify and consolidate concepts in a pragmatic and structured format.

Thank you Jamie and Thanuja for your time and efforts in bringing us this measured skill set that has been lost during formal education.

FAQs

Jamie’s teaching method is lighthearted and easy to understand. He takes complex concepts and gives bite-sized instructions in an order that helps bring it together. I still feel like a beginner, but I now I have some useful clinical skills.
The course was amazing! So well thought out, and the instruction was clear... I feel like I gained so much knowledge in such a small amount of time, and usually that can be overwhelming, but I feel ready to apply what I’ve learnt in practice! I really enjoyed this course, and will recommend it to many!
